In 2006, the Chagrin Vally chapter of Rotary District 6630, asked for volunteers from Rotary Clubs in Chesterland, Burton-Middlefield, Chagrin-Highlands and Chardon, Ohio, to help build six new homes for Katrina victims in Louisiana. The project became a joint effort between Habitat for Humanity and the Rotary, combining the volunteer talent and experience of Habitat, with the brawn and manpower of Rotary volunteers. This became a popular cause bringing out many Rotarians to assemble the walls and doorframes of the six homes.
The project also added a cohesiveness between the Rotary Clubs, and helped to forge a close working relationship with Habitat. Leaders of the project recently made a presentation to the club about the building of two homes in Louisiana, and more homes planned. We applaud their efforts and hope to see continued cooperation in this worthwhile initiative.
